Principal's Message

In 1968, a sixty-acre tract was purchased from the Walker Estate with recommendations to build a 168,073 square-foot comprehensive high school.  Established in 1970, Southwood High School officially opened it's doors in 1971 to focus on the pursuit of excellence.

Southwood High School Programs are a complimentary blend of traditional and progressive curriculums and courses.  From traditional high school academics, extra-curricular offerings and athletics to cutting-edge technology, students can find their niche.  Programs unique to Southwood include Math, Science and Technology Program (MST) that focuses on project-based learning and the integration of technology into the learning process.  The Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) lab encourages real-world applications of traditional learning.

In an effort to provide students of grades 9-12 with a mentoring and leadership based program, the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) classes offer engineering design and robotics in an intense and competitive environment.  Our campus continues to grow with the newest addition to the SHS curriculum, The Biotechnology Magnet Program.  Based on magnet curriculum and certifications, this program promises to help launch those students interested and eligible for the program into the economic growth industry of the 21st century.

Thank you for expressing an interest in Southwood High School.  We are committed to providing a well-rounded education for all of our students.  I invite you to become part of a group of outstanding students, dedicated teachers, accomplished athletes and an environment that promotes excellence inside and outside the classroom.

Join the COWBOY family and take advantage of the excellent opportunities that await you here.

Sincerely,

Ken Wood, Principal
Principal
