Louisiana High School Graduation Requirements

(Classes of 2010 & 2011)

 

23 Units Required

ENGLISH--4 units
 English I, II, and III in consecutive order; and English IV or Business English.

MATHEMATICS--3 units
Shall be selected from the following courses and may include a maximum of two (2) entry-level courses (designated by E):

Introductory Algebra/Geometry (E), Algebra I--Part 1 (E), Algebra--Part 2, Integrated Mathematics I (E), Integrated Mathematics II, Integrated Mathematics III, Applied Mathematics I (E), Applied Mathematics II, Applied Mathematics III, Algebra I (E), Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Probability and Statistics, and Discrete Mathematics.

SCIENCE--3 units
 
Biology I; one unit of physical science (Physical Science OR Integrated Science [not both]), Chemistry I, Physics I, or Physics for Technology I; one unit from Aerospace Science, Biology II, Chemistry II, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physics II, Physics for Technology II, Agriscience II (Agriscience I and II = 1 unit of science credit), or any other course not already taken from the Physical Sciences cluster.

SOCIAL STUDIES--3 units
American History; one-half unit of Civics; one-half unit of Free Enterprise; and one of the following: World History, World Geography, or Western Civilization.

HEALTH EDUCATION--½ units

PHYSICAL EDUCATION--1½ units
 
Physical education I and Physical Education II, or Adapted Physical Education for eligible special education students. NOTE: The substitution of JROTC is permissible. A maximum of four units may be used toward graduation.

ELECTIVES--8 units
It is recommended that four of these credits shall be in an area of concentration with a sequence of related specialty courses plus one related technical course.

The core curriculum is the most important component of the Regents' admissions framework. Research shows that students who take college prep courses double their odds of success in college.

High School Area of Concentration

and Diploma Endorsements

All high schools shall provide students the opportunity to complete an area of concentration with an academic focus and/or a career focus.

 

Diploma Endorsements:  Academic Endorsement      Career/Technical Endorsement

 

  • To complete an academic area of concentration, students shall meet the current course requirements for the Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) Opportunity Award.
     
  • Students must fulfill the designated performance indicators to receive a diploma endorsement.

 

  • To complete a career area of concentration, students shall meet the minimum requirements for graduation including four elective primary credits in the area of concentration and two related elective credits, including one computer/technology course.  The following computer technology courses can be used to meet this requirement:
