Grant helps students prepare for medical careers

Southwood  High School's Bio-Start internship program will be around a few years longer thanks to a $1.3 million grant it received.

It pairs students with medical or research mentors at LSU Health Sciences Center and  Biomedical Research Institute.

The pilot program started last year with donations from corporations and foundations in the Shreveport-Bossier community.

The grant will keep the program around for another five years.  It's known as a science education partnership award. It's one of only 80 in the nation, and the first ever in  Louisiana.
