What is the LVS?

The Louisiana Department of Education in partnership with The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts provides Louisiana high school students access to standards-based high school courses   delivered by Louisiana teachers through The Louisiana Virtual School (LVS).  Students in LVS courses utilize the web, e-mail, and other online and offline resources to complete a rich course of study in a multitude of courses.  Courses offered at Southwood are Computer Science I with Java Programming, Digital Graphics and Animation, Web Mastering, Latin I, Latin II, and Calculus.  Dual enrollment courses offered through Northwestern University include English IV, Advanced Math, and Fine Arts Survey.

What type of student should take an LVS course?

Taking a course online requires personal discipline and good time management skills.  Students should not expect that there will be less to do than in the regular classroom since each course must adhere to the Louisiana standards and benchmarks for the area of instruction.  Computer expertise is not required; however, students should be aware that a certain level of computer skill and comfort is necessary to do work online.

Will fees be charged for participants in the project?

The only fee associated with the program is the cost of a personal headphone which becomes the personal property of the student.  The school provides an onsite facilitator, hardware and software, computer access, and a unique email account for each student.  .

What help and support will students receive?

Students will have a local on-site facilitator in the school and a toll free technical support number.

Does LVS supply books, workbooks and other materials for the online classes?

LVS supplies all books, workbooks, and supplementary materials for online classes.
